The iconic symbol of summer to me has always been the Adirondack Chair. Nothing congers up more images of warm summer afternoons, relaxing in the shade with a glass of lemonade, better than this always comfortable chair. I grew up with an earlier version of this chair – an ever-present item out my bedroom window, which faced the backyard – and it was one of the first items I purchased as soon as I had a backyard of my own.
The great thing today is that they now come in amazing colors, with some that never need painting – the only thing I did not enjoy about our old wooden chairs of the past – and some even come foldable, like this one I just saw from Orvis. How cool is that!
Just this weekend, my Adirondack and I caught a glimpse of summer with 60-degree temperatures and a hint of sun. I quickly seized the moment; grabbed a towel to dry off my favorite chair from the earlier rain of the day, and pulled it into the sunshine for a wonderful 30 minutes of daydreaming – until the rain started up again. Today, as I peek out my back window, my Adirondack sits cool and wet with Seattle rain again, but it won’t be long until my favorite chair and I enjoy another moment in the sun. Until then, I will savor yesterday’s warm, sunny 30 minutes with fond memories.
