We’re touched by our friend Jené’s #NotAZero campaign to encourage healthy body image in women and young girls. Jené Luciani is a renowned style expert, TV host, and author. She’s a regular style contributor to popular media such as The Today Show, Dr. Oz, E!, Wendy Williams Show, Nate Berkus, and Shape Magazine. After a recent appearance on the Dr. Oz Show, Jené received an email that moved her to create a movement encouraging women to finally accept and love the skin they are in.
We spoke to Jené immediately following the launch of her #NotAZero campaign to find out more.
She told us, “I felt motivated to do something after recently appearing in a charity fashion show with a group of very thin teen girls, and heard many references to ‘I need to lose 10 pounds’ or ‘so and so really needs to tone up.’ It really scared me — let’s focus on doing the best we can to be healthy, starting with having a healthy attitude about body image.”
Jene is not alone in recognizing beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. BusinessWeek called attention to a new media movement that is suddenly acknowledging, and catering to, this long-ignored silent majority. Right after Mercedes Benz Fashion Week’s final runway parade of size zero models, top titles launched plus size columns.
Citing Marie Claire’s groundbreaking “Big Girl in a Skinny World” column and InStyle magazine’s new “Full-Figure Flair” page, BusinessWeek aptly points out that “…signs of a shift in attitudes toward plus-size women are rife in the popular culture.” With Lucky magazine’s October issue announcement that it too will start covering plus-size fashions, it’s clear the top fashion magazines are rolling out the red carpet for plus-size fashionistas in a big way.
We wish you the best, Jené, with your campaign. We could all use a dose of encouragement when it comes to having a healthy attitude towards our #NotAZero bodies!
